Functional Rehab & Strength Training

Rehab you actually do, in a gym built for it — not a printout to figure out on your own.

Get your strength, capacity, and confidence back — not just a piece of paper

Functional rehab and strength training is how we make sure the problem we just treated actually stays fixed. Instead of handing you a photocopied sheet of exercises to figure out on your own at a commercial gym, we coach you through the real training — loaded, progressive, and specific to what your body needs — right here in our in-office functional gym. At ChiroMovement, this isn’t an add-on. It’s how every condition we treat gets built back up, not just calmed down.

When a printout of exercises never actually got done

Almost everyone we see has a version of the same story: a provider handed them a sheet of stretches or exercises, told them to do it at home, and that was the extent of their “rehab.” Without coaching, load, or accountability, most of those sheets end up in a drawer — and the underlying weakness or movement problem that got them hurt in the first place never actually changes.

Pain can calm down with rest, adjustments, or passive treatment alone. But the tissue and the movement pattern underneath it only get more resilient when they’re trained — under real load, with someone watching how you move and adjusting it in real time.

"Calming pain down and building capacity are two different jobs. Passive care can do the first. Only progressive, coached strength training does the second — and skipping it is why so many people's pain just keeps coming back."

How Dr. Bird explains the gap between treatment and rehab

Dr. Bird at ChiroMovement is not your typical chiropractor. He truly dedicates his time to getting to know his patients, athletes, and movers. While Dr. Bird makes chiropractic/skeletal adjustments as needed, the heart of his work lies in understanding the area of pain/discomfort. From there he teaches his patients how to stabilize, adapt, and strengthen the area of weakness. His holistic approach that centers around PT/Rehab ideologies is what helped me go from injury to deadlifting and squatting over 400 lbs on the platform today.

What is functional rehab & strength training, here?

Functional rehab is progressive, loaded exercise — coached in person, in our own functional gym — that’s built around what your specific condition and goals actually require. It draws on the same principles that build strength and resilience in any well-run training program: progressive overload, movement quality, and graded exposure to the things that currently feel hard or unstable.

The difference from a generic gym program is specificity. Your plan is built from your evaluation — the movement patterns you’re missing, the tissue that needs to tolerate more load, the exact demand your sport, job, or daily life places on your body — not a template pulled off a shelf.

And the difference from a home exercise handout is us. You’re coached through the actual sets and reps, in our space, with real equipment — not left to guess whether you’re doing it right.

Not a handout

A sheet of exercises assumes you already know how to load a hinge pattern safely, how much weight is appropriate, and how to progress it week to week. Most people don't — and guessing wrong is how a rehab exercise turns into a new injury. Here, every set is coached, every load is chosen for you, and the plan changes as your capacity does.

Applied to every condition we treat

This isn’t a service tied to one body part — it’s the rehab layer underneath everything else we do.

Training & performance

  • Returning to lifting after an injury or flare-up
  • Troubleshooting a stalled lift or sticking point
  • Off-season strength & capacity building
  • In-season load management around a meet or competition

Everyday & degenerative

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Knee & hip osteoarthritis
  • General strength decline or deconditioning
  • Balance & fall-risk concerns

Post-injury & recovery

  • Post-surgical rehab (ACL, rotator cuff, spine, and others)*
  • Return-to-sport or return-to-lifting clearance
  • Rebuilding after a long layoff from training
  • Pain that’s persisted despite passive care alone

This is the plan — not something added onto it

On other pages, we talk about laser, dry needling, or an adjustment as one part of a larger plan. Functional rehab and strength training is that larger plan. Passive care creates the opportunity for tissue to change; the coached training in our gym is what actually uses that opportunity to build something back — the strength, movement quality, and confidence that keep you from ending up back in the same spot.

What your plan will look like

1

We evaluate the problem

A real exam and movement assessment — we find out what's actually driving your pain and where your capacity is limited.

2

We build a plan specific to you

Not a generic template — a progression built from your evaluation, your goals, and the demands of your sport or daily life.

3

You train it, coached, in our gym

Real sets, real load, real equipment — with correction happening in the moment, not after the fact.

4

The load progresses as you do

Each session builds on the last. What felt hard a month ago becomes the warm-up.

5

We reassess what matters

Strength, range of motion, and function — not just "does it feel better today."

Is this you?

  • You've been given exercises before — by us or someone else — and never actually got them coached or progressed.
  • You're recovering from an injury or surgery and want to know you're loading it correctly, not just guessing at a commercial gym.
  • You've lost strength or confidence in a lift, a movement, or just everyday tasks, and want it back systematically.
  • You want your treatment plan to end with you stronger and more capable than when you started — not just "pain-free for now."

Why ChiroMovement?

Dr. Bird working with client.

A real gym, in the clinic

Racks, plates, and real equipment — not a hallway with a couple of bands. You train here, not somewhere else on your own.

One-on-one coaching

You see Dr. Bird, not a rotating tech — every visit, every load decision.

More than temporary relief

Passive care calms the tissue down; strength training is what keeps the problem from just coming back.

Built for active adults

From competitive strength athletes to anyone who just wants to keep up with life without surgery.

A plan you can understand

You’ll know exactly why you’re loading what you’re loading — not just told to trust the process.

Care designed to help you move forward

Dr. Steven Bird is a chiropractor at ChiroMovement in West Jordan, Utah. His approach goes beyond an “adjust-and-go” model by combining individualized assessment, manual treatment, progressive rehabilitation, and technologies such as shockwave therapy when appropriate.

The purpose of care is not to chase perfect alignment or keep you dependent on treatment. It is to help you build the movement options, strength, and physical capacity needed to return to the life you want to live.

I have been working towards and feel closer to being able to go on a hike before the summer is over. But I think it would have been a lot different if I had not done your program. I would not have been strong enough. I'm getting back to where I was in my earlier phase, perhaps before the atrophy. I value the progress and knowledge of how to get that back! Thank you for all you did to help me in my progress!

I had already gone through 3 weeks of physical therapy elsewhere before going here, and within a week I could see improvement . I would highly recommend anyone to go here.

Excellent care. When I first started, I had a lot of pain in one of my delts that was preventing me from being able to bench properly. Dr. Bird was able to identify the issue and over the course of several weeks was able to help minimalize the pain.

Highly recommend! Dr. Bird has taken care of me countless times for many different things including quad pain, back pain and thumb joint pain over the years. He’s direct and professional and 10/10. Go see him!

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as physical therapy?

It overlaps in purpose — rebuilding strength and function — but it’s delivered as coached, progressive strength training in our own gym, integrated directly with your chiropractic care rather than as a separate referral.

Do I need to already be “in shape” to start?

No. Every program starts from your actual current capacity, whatever that is, and progresses from there. We coach complete beginners and competitive athletes in the same space.

How is this different from just joining a regular gym?

A regular gym doesn’t evaluate your injury history, coach your form in real time, or adjust your program around what your body is actually ready for. This is guided, one-on-one, and built around your specific condition.

Will I still get adjustments or other treatment too?

Usually, yes — this is typically layered in alongside your adjustment or other treatment, not done as a total replacement for it.

How long until I notice a difference?

It depends on the condition and your starting point. We’ll give you a real estimate after your evaluation, not a generic timeline.

You don't have to settle for "pain-free for now."

Let’s build you back up — for real, and for good.
