What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial release (MFR) is a hands-on technique that targets your fascia — the connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, bone, and joint in your body like a full-body web. When fascia gets tight, dehydrated, or scarred down from training, injury, or just sitting at a desk all day, it restricts how your muscles glide against each other. That restriction shows up as tightness, pain, and stiffness that stretching alone often can’t touch.

During a session, Dr. Bird applies sustained, direct pressure to the restricted areas — no oils, no quick jabs — and holds it until the tissue actually releases and softens. It’s slower and more deliberate than a typical massage, because the goal isn’t just relaxation. It’s restoring normal movement in tissue that’s stopped moving the way it should.

Why We Use It

Myofascial release is one of the tools we use to get the soft tissue side of your body working the way your joints need it to. A few reasons it’s part of your care plan:

  • It restores range of motion without sacrificing strength. Unlike static stretching before a lift, MFR loosens restricted tissue without the temporary strength loss that comes from holding a deep stretch pre-training.
  • It speeds up recovery between hard training sessions. Breaking up fascial restrictions improves local blood flow, which helps clear the byproducts of a heavy squat or deadlift session and takes the edge off soreness faster.
  • It adds movement into stiff and restricted tissues. Old injuries — a strained hamstring, a rolled ankle, a shoulder tweak — often heal with disorganized scar tissue that never fully resolves on its own. MFR helps reorganize load along specific lines of tissues through compression and force within specific directions.
  • It complements your adjustments. An adjustment restores joint motion; myofascial release addresses the muscle and fascia that were holding the joint in that restricted position in the first place. Skip one and the other tends not to hold as well.
  • It finds and releases trigger points. Tight, irritable knots in muscle tissue can refer pain to other areas of the body — a hip trigger point can mimic sciatica, a trap trigger point can mimic a headache. MFR addresses the source, not just where you feel it.

This pairs well with our shockwave therapy (Precision Pulse FX) for stubborn spots that need an extra push.

Dr. Bird has been great to work with. Very knowledgeable and passionate! He helped me address chronic issues with my lower back and hips. Highly recommended!

Conditions We Treat With Myofascial Release

We use myofascial release as part of a care plan for:

Chronic and acute low back pain
Sciatica and piriformis syndrome
Hip and glute tightness (squatters & deadlifters)
IT band syndrome and lateral knee pain
Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff tightness
Neck and upper back tension
Scar tissue and adhesions from past injury or surgery
Slow recovery between training blocks
Restricted squat, hinge, or overhead mobility
Posterior hip pain

If you’re a competitive lifter, CrossFit athlete, or strongman or Highland Games competitor, tight fascia is often the hidden reason a mobility restriction won’t budge no matter how much you stretch. That’s usually where this comes in.

Curious if your symptoms line up with sciatica specifically? See our sciatica page for a closer look at that condition.

What to Expect

Myofascial release is typically worked into your regular visit alongside your adjustment. You’ll feel direct, sustained pressure on the tight area — it can be uncomfortable in the moment, especially on a spot that’s been restricted for a while, but it shouldn’t be sharp or unbearable. Mild soreness for a day afterward is normal, similar to how you’d feel after a deep tissue massage.

As with any hands-on soft tissue work, let us know before your visit if you have a fracture, open wound, blood clotting condition, or are on blood thinners — we’ll adjust your care plan accordingly.

Why ChiroMovement?

Dr. Bird working with client.

One-on-one care

We believe you deserve our full and undivided attention.

More than temporary relief

For muscle and joint restrictions very few tools are as sensitive to tissue tone and texture than the hands on care we provide.

Built for active adults

Your goal may be returning to running, lifting, work, recreation, or simply keeping up with your family. Your care plan should reflect that goal.

A plan you can understand

You should know what we are working on, why we are doing it, and what progress looks like.

Care designed to help you move forward

I get the question often during sessions with patients “so what are you? Like a chiropractor or a physical therapist?” Because most people that have experienced chiropractic before were told that they were out of alignment and needed to be adjusted only. Well when your care goes beyond adjustments only is where we really get to work. I wanted more for my patients beyond adjustments only.

I am a chiropractor at ChiroMovement in West Jordan, Utah. We are able to provide more for you because we know it is necessary.

The purpose of care is not to chase perfect alignment or keep you dependent on treatment. It is to help you build the movement options, strength, and physical capacity needed to return to the life you want to live.

I have been working towards and feel closer to being able to go on a hike before the summer is over. But I think it would have been a lot different if I had not done your program. I would not have been strong enough. I'm getting back to where I was in my earlier phase, perhaps before the atrophy. I value the progress and knowledge of how to get that back! Thank you for all you did to help me in my progress!

Excellent care. When I first started, I had a lot of pain in one of my delts that was preventing me from being able to bench properly. Dr. Bird was able to identify the issue and over the course of several weeks was able to help minimalize the pain.

Frequently asked questions

Does myofascial release hurt?

It can be uncomfortable, especially on a spot that’s been tight for a while, but it shouldn’t be sharp pain. Most patients describe it as “good pressure” rather than painful.

How many sessions until I feel a difference?

Some patients feel looser after a single session. Longstanding restrictions typically take 4-6 visits as part of a broader care plan to fully resolve.

Is this the same as a deep tissue massage?

It can feel similar, but the goal is different. Massage is mainly about relaxation; myofascial release specifically targets restricted fascia to restore movement, and it’s done as part of your chiropractic care plan rather than as a standalone service.

Do you combine it with adjustments or shockwave therapy?

Yes. It’s typically worked into the same visit as your adjustment, and for stubborn areas we’ll often pair it with our Precision Pulse FX shockwave therapy.

If tight, restricted tissue is holding back your training or your recovery, myofascial release might be exactly what your care plan is missing. Book a visit with Dr. Bird to find out if it’s right for you.
